Here are some samples of some of products manufactured for hobbyists:

Serial EEPROM Programmer  $24.99

This board allows you to program serial eeproms (i2c) through a serial port.  Supports both Atmel 24Cxxx series eeproms and Microchip 24LCxxx series of eeproms.  Programmer includes one free 24LC256 serial eeprom.  (unprogrammed).  Uses readily available freeware programming software ('Ponyprog', available from www.lancos.com) to load and/or edit the code, and program the eeprom.  Requires a 9-pin serial cable and a 6 - 9Vdc power adapter.  Add $15.00 for optional 6 foot RS-232 Cable and Power adapter.

Atmel AVR Lite Programmer Board   $24.99

This board is for programming various types of Atmel AVR chips via the parallel port on a computer.  It supports 8-pin, 20-pin, and 40-pin chips such as AT90S2323, 2343, 1200, 2313, 8515.   Power is derived from the parallel port so an external power source is not required.  The only connection to the board is the DB-25 parallel interface.  The board also includes two led's;  one to indicate that there is power to the board, and another to indicate the presence of data being transmitted from the computer to the chip or vice-versa.  This programmer supports many different types of programming software.  The software that we recommend is fbprg16.exe which is readily available on the internet.  Programmer requires a straight-through DB25 male to DB25 female cable. (not included but available for $10.00 extra.)
Dimensions:  2.5" x 3.0"

ISO-7816 Smartcard Programmer Board  $29.99

This board is used for reading and writing to a smartcard or chipcard via the serial port on a computer.  You simply write your program in basic or a scripting language and program your smartcard via the RS-232 interface.  A feature of this board is that it allows for a second crystal oscillator to allow for a wider range of smartcards.  Add CAN$15.00 for optional 6 foot RS-232 Cable and Power adapter.
We can also special-order various open-platform PIC and Atmel chipcards for all of your development needs.
Dimensions:  2.8" x 3.5".
